This card is based on the pearl, which is very different than most gemstones, being produced from living creatures (oysters) rather than mined from the earth.
This card is the only Xyz Monster in the Gem-Knight archetype, as well as the first non-Effect Xyz Monster. This may be based on the Gem-Knight archetype being centered around Normal Monsters.
This card might be an indication that the Gem-Knight archetype and Gishki archetype have joined forces to fight against their new enemy, the Vylon archetype. Also, this card could be the Xyz Summon of Gishki Mollusk and a Level 4 Gem-Knight Normal Monster; pearls are naturally produced when a small piece of rock or sand accidentally gets into a mollusk's shell.
Also, in the Duel Terminal storyline, Gem-Knight Pearl was the one who defeated Vylon Disigma.
This card and Backup Warrior are the only two cards from Battle Pack: Epic Dawn with no prior TCG release.
This monster appears in the artworks of:
Oni-Gami Combo
Pursuit of the Fiend
Rank Wall
Shining Reborn
Wild Charger
Xyz Block
Xyz Reversal
Xyz Soul
Xyz Stand
Xyz Weight
Xyz Xtreme !!
Of the above cards, Oni-Gami Combo was released in the TCG prior to this card's introduction.

If a Gem-Knight Pearl that used a Gagaga Girl as Xyz Material and has obtained its effect that reduces the ATK of a monster to 0 battles a Evilswarm Obliviwisp, the adquired effect is still kept. Also, Gem-Knight Pearl is still treated as an Effect Monster.: If a Gem-Knight Pearl that used a Gagaga Girl as an Xyz Material and has obtained its effect that reduces the ATK of a monster to 0 battles a Evilswarm Obliviwisp, is this effect negated? Or is the adquisition of the effect itself negated and it is no longer treated as an Effect Monster?
Gagaga Girl: If "Gagaga Girl" is used with another "Gagaga" monster as Xyz Material for the Xyz Summon of "Gem-Knight Pearl", then "Gem-Knight Pearl" is treated as an Effect Monster and it can activate the effect given by the effect of "Gagaga Girl". Furthermore, when Gem-Knight Pearl is Xyz Summoned, Divine Wrath, ect, can be chained to it's effect.: If "Gagaga Girl" is used as Xyz Material for the Xyz Summon of "Gem-Knight Pearl" which is not an Effect Monster, does it gain the effect?
