In Japanese mythology, Yatagarasu is a three-legged crow that is a symbol of guidance, as it was sent to guide the Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan and a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu and the storm god Susanoo, on his migration from Kumano to Yamato.
This card is to be the very reason the Forbidden List was created. This card, Cyber Jar, Fiber Jar and Injection Fairy Lily were the first monsters to ever gain the Forbidden status in March 2004 and, with the exception of the latter, and this card, all of them remain banned since then.
In most video games, such as the Tag Force series and the World Championship series, using this card is the only way the opponent AI will ever surrender the Duel. If the player successfully inflicts Battle Damage with this card while the opponent controls no cards and has no cards in their hand, they will be stuck in an inescapable Lockdown, as you can continuously skip their next Draw Phase and prevent them from ever being able to play or use any cards.

Previously Official Rulings
If the Battle Damage caused by this card is reduced to 0 (with the effect of "Kuriboh", "Waboku", etc.) its effect is not activated.
If this face-down Defense Position card is attacked by a monster with 0 ATK, its effect will activate, since Battle Damage was inflicted to the attacking player.
