Card Trivia

This is the first Fiend Xyz Monster to be released in the OCG.
It is also the first Steelswarm monster to be released in the TCG.
This monster appears in the artworks of Advance Zone, Sacred Serpent's Wake and Xyz Move.
This card gains its name from roach - the short name for the insect, cockroach.
This monster has three counterparts.
Its past/child form is Steelswarm Sentinel, as seen from the artwork of Advance Zone.
Its future form (and LIGHT counterpart) is Evilswarm Exciton Knight.
Its Zefra/Tellarknight/Pendulum Monster counterpart is Stellarknight Zefraxciton.
Oddly, this monster appears heroic in design as opposed to its comrades, and uses much more light coloring. In Advance Zone, Steelswarm Sentinel is being surrounded by what appears to be a Vylon artifact, suggesting that the Vylons tried to purify Sentinel and created Roach. This means that it can either be barely infected by the Evilswarm virus, or else is completely immune, making it the only Steelswarm to retain its true form.
Due to the absence of the Steelswarm archetype in Duel Terminal - Xyz Startup!!, it may be that they were defeated by the combined forces of their enemy archetypes, or possibly destroyed themselves by accident in the plague that created the lswarm; either way, Roach is the only prevalent member left, which references it being named after an insect that is known for its survivability.
In the OCG, the name of Steelswarm monsters that are Level 5 or 6 starts with M (probably for Medium or Mega), while those who are Level 7 or 8 starts with G (probably for Great or Giga). This card does not have a Level, but instead a Rank, likely the reason why Roach begins with R.

Detaching 1 Xyz Material from this card is a cost to activate this effect.: Steelswarm Roach

This effect does not target.

This effect cannot be activated multiple times during the same Chain.

This effect can only negate a Special Summon that does not start a Chain Link, like "Cyber Dragon" and "Chaos Sorcerer".

The Special Summon of a Level 5 or higher monster can be negated by the effect of "Steelswarm Roach" regardless of which player performs the Special Summon.: Can the effect of "Steelswarm Roach" negate the Special Summon of a Level 5 or higher monster Summoned by either player?

The effect of "Steelswarm Roach" can negate the Special Summon of a monster like "Chaos Sorcerer" and the Synchro Summon of a Synchro Monster like "Ally of Justice Catastor". However, the effect of "Steelswarm Roach" cannot negate the Special Summon of a monster that starts a Chain Link like "Gorz the Emissary of Darkness" and "Doppelwarrior". Furthermore, you cannot Chain the effect of "Steelswarm Roach" to the activation of "Polymerization" or a Ritual Spell Card.: What Special Summons can "Steelswarm Roach" negate?

When a Level 4 and a Level 5 monster are Special Summoned simultaneously by a Pendulum Summon, then the effect of "Steelswarm Roach" can be activated. If you do, the Pendulum Summon of the Level 5 monster is negated, but the Level 4 monster is Pendulum Summoned normally. Similarly, when a DARK monster and an EARTH monster are Special Summoned simultaneously by a Pendulum Summon, "Chaos Trap Hole" can be activated. If you do, the Pendulum Summon of the DARK monster is negated, but the EARTH monster is Pendulum Summoned normally.: Can "Chaos Trap Hole" or the effect of "Steelswarm Roach" be activated in response to a Pendulum Summon?
