This is the main card of the 1999 Yu-Gi-Oh! movie produced by Toei Animation. In the movie, the card is owned by Shougo Aoyama. It's also stated in the movie that Blue-Eyes represents power while Red-Eyes represents potential.
Another theme regarding the two Monsters and certain cards in their archetypes is violence/anger (Red-Eyes) and destruction/pride (Blue-Eyes). This is alluded to by their descriptions in Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards.
Inferno Fire Blast, Red-Eyes Burn, Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon, Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon, Archfiend Black Skull Dragon, and Meteor Black Comet Dragon all inflict Burn damage.
Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon, Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, Burst Stream of Destruction, and Neutron Blast revolve around destroying the opponents' cards.
These archetypes' traits arguably describe the characters that represent their archetypes. Red-Eyes and its wrathful connotation could describe Joey Wheeler's past as a bully and temperament when ridiculed. Blue-Eyes and its references to destruction and power could represent Seto Kaiba and his vanity.
Prior to its reprint in Legendary Duelists: Season 1, this card was known as Red-Eyes B. Dragon in the TCG, with the B. standing for Black, as confirmed by its pronunciation in the English-dubbed anime and this card's translated Japanese name.
This card has several counterparts:
A metal counterpart: Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon
An egg counterpart: The Black Stone of Legend
Two baby counterparts: Black Dragon's Chick and Red-Eyes Baby Dragon.
Two younger counterparts: Red-Eyes Wyvern and Red-Eyes Retro Dragon.
A Gemini counterpart: Red-Eyes Black Flare Dragon.
A Malefic counterpart: Malefic Red-Eyes Black Dragon
A Toon counterpart: Red-Eyes Toon Dragon
A LIGHT counterpart: Blue-Eyes White Dragon
A Zombie counterpart: Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon
An evolved counterpart: Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon, which itself has its own metal and zombie counterparts, Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon Lord
Unlike Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon, this card does not have a Match Winner counterpart.
This monster appears in the artworks of Red-Eyes Burn, Red-Eyes Spirit, Inferno Fire Blast, The Rival's Name, Red-Eyes Insight, and Cyberdark Invasion.
This monster's silhouette appears in the artwork of Red-Eyes Black Dragon Sword, reflecting the fact that in the anime, it was formed when Joey Wheeler fused this monster and The Claw of Hermos together.
This fact is also reflected in that monster's Attribute, Level, Type, ATK, and DEF, which are the same as this card's.
This card's first OCG/TCG artwork is taken from , specifically from the panel showing this monster being Summoned.
The Bandai version of this card has 2400 DEF, while this card has 2000 DEF.
Red-Eyes Black Dragon has 3 claws in its first and second OCG/TCG artworks, while the third, fourth, and fifth artworks have 4 claws.
During the Waking the Dragons story arc, this was the only ace monster of the three main characters (Yugi, Joey, and Kaiba) that was never affected by The Seal of Orichalcos.
Red-Eyes Black Dragon has a similar design to Ridley, a boss from Nintendo's Metroid series.

OCG Rulings
Malefic: You cannot Special Summon a Synchro Monster if it was not properly Synchro Summoned previously, such as if it was removed from play directly from the Extra Deck. Thus, you cannot use an effect like "D.D.R. - Different Dimension Reincarnation" or "Return from the Different Dimension" to Special Summon a "Stardust Dragon" which was removed from play to Special Summon "Malefic Stardust Dragon". Also, "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" and "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" are Normal Summon monster
Inferno Fire Blast: No copies of "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" can attack if you activate "Inferno Fire Blast".
Inferno Fire Blast: If "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" attacked, you cannot activate "Inferno Fire Blast" during Main Phase 2, but if "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" did not attack, you can activate "Inferno Fire Blast" during Main Phase 2.
Inferno Fire Blast: As long as a "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" is on the field when you activate "Inferno Fire Blast", "Inferno Fire Blast" still resolves normally even if "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" is no longer on the field when "Inferno Fire Blast" resolves.
Inferno Fire Blast: If "Imperial Order" is chained to "Inferno Fire Blast", the effect of "Inferno Fire Blast" is negated but "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" cannot attack. However, if "Magic Jammer" negates the activation of "Inferno Fire Blast", your "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" can attack.
Inferno Fire Blast: If you only have 1 "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" on the field, you can activate multiple copies of "Inferno Fire Blast" designating that same "Red-Eyes Black Dragon".
Inferno Fire Blast: If "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" equipped with "Megamorph" is selected for "Inferno Fire Blast", you inflict 2400 damage to the opponent.
Black Dragon's Chick: If you take control of your opponent's "Black Dragon's Chick", you can activate its effect. In this case, the "Black Dragon's Chick" is sent to your opponent's Graveyard, but you get to Special Summon "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" from your hand.
The Dark - Hex-Sealed Fusion: To use the second effect of this monster, you must Tribute this monster plus the legal Fusion Material Monster(s) written on the Fusion Monster. For example, to Special Summon "Black Skull Dragon" you must Tribute "The Dark - Hex-Sealed Fusion" as well as either "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" or "Summoned Skull".
Inferno Fire Blast: If you control "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" and activate "Inferno Fire Blast" to inflict damage, and then after that resolves you activate "Non-Spellcasting Area", "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" still cannot attack because "Non-Spellcasting Area" will not negate the condition. The latest print of "Inferno Fire Blast" has Problem-Solving Card Text which indicates that the restriction on "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" attacking is a condition that does not affect "Red-Eyes Black Dragons", so it cannot be negated by "Non-Spellcasting Area".
