Card Trivia

This card appears in the artwork of Card of Last Will.
Lava Golem and the card Grinder Golem have many similarities:
Both monsters must be Special Summoned under your opponent's control.
Both require 2 monsters to be Summoned, but this card requires Tributes while Grinder Golem provides 2 monsters for the player who Summoned it.
After the Special Summon, neither monster allows Normal Summoning or Setting another monster during the same turn.
Both monsters also have 3000 ATK.
Both monsters are Golems, as their names say.
Both are Fiend-Type monsters.
Yet also both monsters don't have a typical fiend-like physical appearance; Lava-Golem looks more like a Pyro-Type and Grinder Golem looks Machine-Type like.
Also in the anime, both cards are used by secondary characters who were at one point bedeviled under the influence of a more perverse character (Lava Golem is used by Marik Ishtar, when he was under the influence of his dark counterpart, whereas this card is used by Jesse Anderson, when he temporarily served as Yubel's host.)
As most of Yami Marik's primary cards are based on torture devices, this card seems to be based upon torture through hot temperatures or burning.
The person being imprisoned in a cage while Lava Golem stares the victim down is likely a reference to what happened to Joey Wheeler during his Duel with Marik: Joey (the enemy Duelist) is in the cage and the Golem melts onto the duelist, burning them and taking away their Life Points.

Summoning "
Lava Golem" makes it so that player is unable to Normal Summon for the turn. Similar to how if your Normal Summon gets negated, you are still unable to perform another Normal Summon for the turn, the same applies to the Special Summoning of "Lava Golem".: Lava Golem and Volcanic vs. Royal Oppression/Solemn Warning

Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo: You will not be able to Special Summon "Lava Golem" while "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo" is face-up on the field. The effect of "Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo" makes it so you cannot Special Summon a monster. You will not be able to perform the action to Special Summon "Lava Golem".: Lava golem vz fossil dyna pachcephaol

Previously Official Rulings

"
Lava Golem" must be Special Summoned to your opponent's side of the field using its effect text; you cannot Special Summon it or Tribute Summon it to your side of the field.

However, if Special Summoned correctly and then sent to the Graveyard, you can use "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon "Lava Golem" to your side of the field, but you (as the controller) will then take the 1000 damage during your Standby Phases.

You cannot Summon or Set and then Special Summon Lava Golem.

If you Special Summon "Lava Golem" onto your opponent's side of the field they can activate "Bottomless Trap Hole" since you performed the Summon. You could not activate "Bottomless Trap Hole" even though the "Lava Golem" will be on their side of the field.

You can Tribute "Sheep Tokens" to Special Summon "Lava Golem" because it is not a Tribute Summon.

Since Tributed monsters are not considered to be targeted, you can use "Lava Golem" and Tribute your opponent's Dragons even if he has "Lord of D." on the field.

You cannot Special Summon "Lava Golem" if the opponent has "Jowgen the Spiritualist" face-up on the field, nor can you Tribute their "Jowgen the Spiritualist" to Special Summon "Lava Golem".
