Card Trivia

The object attached to the chain is not a kunai. Real life kunai are Japanese digging tools, similar to a trowel, that ninjas used primarily as stabbing weapons (though they can be thrown like a shuriken). They can be combined with a length of chain or rope to form a weapon known as a rope dart (which is used similarly to a chain whip in Chinese martial arts), but the object on the card more closely resembles a kusarigama.
Additionally, despite its OCG name being Chain-Attached Boomerang, the object itself barely resembles one.
In
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards, Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction and Yu-Gi-Oh! BAM", this card is a Spell Card.

OCG Rulings

The effect of "Kunai with Chain" which turns a monster to Defense Position targets one monster which declared an attack.: Trap Card > Kunai with Chain

The effect of "Kunai with Chain" which equips it to a monster targets the one monster to which "Kunai with Chain" will be equipped.

When "Kunai with Chain" becomes an Equip Card and is equipped to a monster, it will remain equipped even if the effect of "Kunai with Chain" is negated.

If you choose to apply both effects of "Kunai with Chain", then both effects are resolved simultaneously.

In Response to an Attack

The effect of "Kunai with Chain" can only change a monster to Defense Position if the monster is attacking. You cannot change a monster which is not attacking to Defense Position.: Can "Kunai with Chain" be activated during the opponent's Battle Phase?

If you activate "Kunai with Chain" during the Battle Step, then you can activate its effect which changes the Battle Position. You cannot activate this effect if you activate "Kunai with Chain" during the Damage Step.

The effect of "Kunai with Chain" does not cause a Replay.

If a card like "Mirror Force" is activated in response to an attack, then "Negate Attack" can still be activated in chain. However, note that "Negate Attack" will resolve first, so cards like "Enchanted Javelin" or "Magical Arm Shield" will resolve without effect because the monster is no longer attacking. Card like "Mirror Force" or "Widespread Ruin" which have the text, "Activate only when your opponent declares an attack." only have the attack declaration as activation conditions, so their effects will still be applied even if the attack is negated. If "Kunai with Chain" is activated and then a chained card negates the attack, then "Kunai with Chain" will still give +500 ATK, but the attacking monster will not be changed to Defense Position.: If "Magical Arm Shield" or "Enchanted Javelin" are activated in response to an attack, can "Negate Attack" be chained?

On Being an Equip Trap Card

Cards like "Kunai with Chain" and "Horn of the Phantom Beast" are treated as Trap Cards with effects that equip them to monsters. They are not treated as Spell Cards. They are treated as Equip Cards.: Are Trap Cards which equip themselves treated as Spell Cards?

You can equip a Trap Card to an opponent's monster, but only if the Trap Card does not specify "your monster". So, you can equip "Metalmorph" to an opponent's monster because it does not specify otherwise, but you cannot equip "Blast with Chain" nor "Kunai with Chain" to an opponent's monster because these cards specify "your monster".: Can you equip to an opponent's monster a Trap Card which is treated as an Equip Spell Card?

Evocator Chevalier: Sending one Equip Spell Card to the Graveyard is a cost to activate the effect of "Evocator Chevaliernegates the activation of a Spell or Trap Card. You can also send a Trap Card like "Kunai with Chain" to the Graveyard.: Effect Monster > Evocator Chevalier

Junk Collector: You cannot activate the effect of "Junk Collector" by removing from play card like "Metalmorph" or "Blast with Chain". You can activate the effect by removing from play "Kunai with Chain", but you can only apply the effect which changes an attacking monster to Defense Position when an opponent's monster declares an attack. You cannot apply the effect which equips it to a monster on your side of the field.: Can the effect of "Junk Collector" be activated by removing from play a card like "Kunai with Chain"?

Phoenix Gearfried: Sending one Equip Card from your field to the Graveyard is a cost to activate the effect of "Phoenix Gearfried" which negates the activation of a Spell or Trap Card. You can also send to the Graveyard an equipped Trap Card, like "Kunai with Chain". This effect does not target.: Effect Monster > Phoenix Gearfried
