Kotodama or kototama (言霊) refers to the Japanese belief that mystical powers dwell in words and names. English translations include soul of language, spirit of language, power of language, power word, magic word, and sacred sound. The notion of kotodama presupposes that sounds can magically affect objects, and that ritual word usages can influence our environment, body, mind, and soul.
This is thematically referenced in the card effect, which punishes the opponent for playing monsters that share names.
This card is the first EARTH Fairy monster, as well as the first Fairy monster with 0 ATK.
This card caused some rulings issues when initially released, due to the poor wording on how this card’s effect worked (as it was released pre-PSCT). The latest errata made sure to clear up the rulings by including all of the following text in parentheses, something that is rare in the card game.
“Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch” has a near identical effect to this card.
