Card Trivia

Sword of Kusanagi appears in this card's artwork.
This monster is based on the Shinto Sun goddess Amaterasu. She was one of the children of Izanagi, and has two brothers, Tsukuyomi and Susa no O.
This card's flip-based effect is based on the legend of Ama-no-Iwato, where Amaterasu sealed herself inside a cave and deprived the world of sunlight as a result, until she was tricked into coming out. That cave is also represented by a Spirit monster, Amano-Iwato.
Upon release, this card had the highest ATK of all Spirit monsters. It has since tied with Shinobaron Peacock and Tsumuha-Kutsunagi the Lord of Swords.
This is the first monster that cannot be Normal nor Special Summoned under any circumstances bar effects that ignore Summoning Conditions.
As a result it is the only monster whose primary way of hitting the field is being Tribute Set (although it can be Set without Tributes with the effect of Mausoleum of the Emperor).
