This card is the Wicked God version of the Egyptian God Card The Winged Dragon of Ra. It also resembles Ra in Sphere Mode, and was referred to as a dark sun.
The similarity between the two is further reflected in the manga. In this manner, the effect of Avatar is the reverse of Ra's which has several effects to gain ATK such as using all but 1 of your Life Points for its effect and gaining ATK by sacrificing monsters (including its Tributes) in the anime and manga, while Avatar only has one where the ATK and DEF of this card was only 1 point higher than the strongest monster (both were changed to 100 for the TCG/OCG). In other words, Avatar needs monsters alive to be stronger while Ra needs monsters Tributed to become stronger. This card actually became stronger in the OCG/TCG, while Ra became weaker.
In the original manga artwork, there was a ghostly image within the sphere, which was removed in all real-life printings.
In the manga, this monster changes its form depending on the strongest monster on the field, changing into a black version of that monster. If a Metal Devil is the strongest monster on the field, the Avatar would instead take on the form of the player's whose Life Points it represents - Yugi in that case.
This card is the first ? DEF DARK monster in the OCG.

Clear Vice Dragon: If this card attacks "The Wicked Avatar", its ATK will become double that of "The Wicked Avatar" then "The Wicked Avatar" would become this card's ATK plus 100. No further change will occur.
OCG Rulings
If a Field Spell Card would affect "The Wicked Avatar"s ATK/DEF, then "The Wicked Avatar"s effect overrides the change. "The Wicked Avatar"s effect always determines its ATK/DEF.: Do Field or Equip Cards alter "The Wicked Avatar"s ATK?

Metalmorphyou monster that is equipped with "Metalmorph" attacks your opponent's "The Wicked Avatar", first you will apply the additional gained ATK based on the current ATK of "The Wicked Avatar", and then if your equipped monster becomes the monster with the highest ATK on the field, the ATK of "The Wicked Avatar" will be recalculated.
Example: Player A has "Cannon Soldier" equipped with "Metalmorph" (1400 + 300 = 1700 ATK). "Cannon Soldier" is the monster with the highest ATK on the field, so "The Wicked Avatar" has 1800 ATK (1700 + 100 = 1800 ATK). When "Cannon Soldier" attacks "The Wicked Avatar", the additional ATK is applied, giving "Cannon Soldier" a total of 2600 ATK (1800/2 + 1700 = 2600). "The Wicked Avatar's" ATK is then recalculated to 2700 (2600 + 100 = 2700) and damage is calculated. Player A's "Cannon Soldier" is destroyed and Player A takes 100 points of Battle Damage.
