Card Trivia

This card has a retrain artwork version called The Deep Grave, where the reaper-like being is trapped in a deep hole with his familiar floating above.
But in this one, the reaper is rising from a shallow grave.
Both also make an appearance in “Gravedigger's Trap Hole”.

Gale Dogra: You cannot Special Summon a monster sent from the Extra Deck to your Graveyard with cards like "Monster Reborn," "The Shallow Grave," or "Call of the Haunted."

Scary Moth: If your opponent has already Special Summoned this turn and “Scary Moth” is face-up on the field, you may activate “The Shallow Grave.” If you do, only you will Special Summon a monster.

Scary Moth: If you activate “The Shallow Grave” while “Scary Moth” is face-up on the field, it will count as the one Special Summon per turn for both players.

OCG Rulings

"The Shallow Grave" targets two monsters: one from each Graveyard.: Spell Card > The Shallow Grave

To activate "The Shallow Grave", there must be at least one legal target in each Graveyard.: Can "The Shallow Grave" be activated when either Graveyard does not have a monster which can be Special Summoned?

This is treated as both a Special Summon and a Set.

The Turn Player selects first.

If you gain control of the monster Special Summoned to your opponent's field, then you can change its Battle Position.

"Chain Destruction" cannot be activated when a monster is Special Summoned face-down by "The Shallow Grave".: Can "Chain Destruction" be activated when monster is Special Summoned face-down by "Cyber Jar"?

"The Immortal of Thunder" needs to be flipped for you to lose Life Points when it is sent to the Graveyard. If it is Special Summoned and sent to the Graveyard without being flipped, then you will not lose Life Points. If it is Special Summoned by "The Shallow Grave" and then flipped and then sent to the Graveyard, you will lose Life Points since it was flipped.: Do you lose Life Points when "The Immortal of Thunder" is Special Summoned from the Graveyard and then sent to the Graveyard?

You can Set a "Special Summon only" monster (Semi-Nomi monster) from the Graveyard if it has been properly Summoned previously.: Can a "Special Summon only" monster be Set face-down by "The Shallow Grave"?

While "Dark Simorgh" is on the field, the opponent cannot Set cards on the field, so he cannot activate the effect of "Book of Moon", and neither player may activate "The Shallow Grave".: Can "Book of Moon" or "The Shallow Grave" be activated if "Dark Simorgh" is on the field?

With "Black Garden", when a monster is Special Summoned face-down (such as with "The Shallow Grave"), "Black Garden"s effect still activates. The monster's ATK is not halved, but you still Special Summon a "Rose Token".: When "Black Garden" is on the field, what happens when a monster is Special Summoned face-down?

You can activate "Giant Trap Hole" when one monster is Special Summoned to each player's side of the field, such as by "Spear Cretin" or "The Shallow Grave".: When two monsters are Special Summoned to each player's side of the field, can you activate "Giant Trap Hole"?

When the Turn Player Sets a Spell/Trap/Monster Card by the effect of "Book of Moon"/"The Shallow Grave"/etc or from the hand, he may not use Priority to activate the Ignition Effect of a monster. If the Turn Player does not use Priority to activate an Ignition or a Spell Speed 2+ Effect in response to the Set, then the opponent can activate a Spell Speed 2+ Effect in response to the Set. Also, the Turn Player cannot Set multiple cards simultaneously - he must Set one, then pass Priority, and then Set the second, etc.: At the time of the Set of a card, can the Turn Player activate an Ignition Effect of a monster?

While the effect of "Koa'ki Meiru Drago" is active, LIGHT and DARK monster cannot be Special Summoned in face-down Defense Position by effects like "The Shallow Grave" or "Spear Cretin".: While the effect of "Koa'ki Meiru Drago" is active, can LIGHT and DARK monsters be Special Summoned in face-down Defense Position?

The effect of "Koa'ki Meiru Tornado" can destroy face-down monsters, such as monsters Special Summoned face-down by "The Shallow Grave" or monsters that were Special Summoned and then flipped face-down by "Book of Moon".: Can "Koa'ki Meiru Tornado" destroy a monster which was Special Summoned face-down?

With "The Shallow Grave", it is treated as each player Special Summoning one monster. Thus, if "The Shallow Grave" is activated while "Summon Limit" is active, then afterwards each player can Normal Summon/Flip Summon/Special Summon one more time.: If "The Shallow Grave" is activated while the effect of "Summon Limit" is active, then it is treated as who Special Summoning what?

You can activate the effect of "Catoblepas and the Witch of Fate" when "The Shallow Grave" Special Summons monsters face-down. In this case, only the opponent's Special Summoned monster will be destroyed.: Can the effect of "Catoblepas and the Witch of Fate" be activated when a monster(s) is Special Summoned face-down by an effect like "The Shallow Grave"?

Mentions in Other Rulings

Heat Wave: While "Heat Wave" is active, you cannot activate "Call of the Haunted" or "The Shallow Grave" (etc) by targeting an Effect Monster. You cannot activate "The Shallow Grave" unless both players have a non-Effect monster in their Graveyards.: Can you activate "Call of the Haunted" and "The Shallow Grave" (and so on) while "Heat Wave" is active?

Torrential Tribute: You can activate "Torrential Tribute" even if a monster(s) is Special Summoned face-down by an effect like "The Shallow Grave" or "Cyber Jar: Trap Card > Torrential Tribute

Previously Official Rulings

If "
The Shallow Grave" is activated while "Light of Intervention" is active, the monsters are Special Summoned in face-up Defense Position.

"The Shallow Grave" cannot be activated if either play has no open Monster Card Zones or if either player does not have a monster in their Graveyard that they can Special Summon.

Big Burn:" You can chain "Big Burn" to effects like"The Shallow Grave"

D.D. Trap Hole:" "Set", as a verb (as in the first sentence of "D.D. Trap Hole"), means placing a monster face-down. So you can activate "D.D. Trap Hole" when your opponent Sets a monster from the hand, or Special Summons a monster face-down with "The Shallow Grave", or flips his monster face-down with a card effect.

D.D. Trap Hole:" If your opponent Sets more than 1 monster simultaneously, as with "Cyber Jar", you cannot activate "D.D. Trap Hole". Giant Trap Hole:" You can activate “Giant Trap Hole” when 1 monster is Special Summoned to each side of the field, by “The Shallow Grave”, etc.

Gravekeeper's Chief:" You cannot activate "The Shallow Grave" while "Necrovalley" is active, even if you control "Gravekeeper's Chief", because your opponent cannot Special Summon a monster from his Graveyard. The latest print of "Necrovalley" has Problem-Solving Card Text which states that it negates the effects of cards that move cards in the Graveyard to other locations, so the effect can be activated but will be negated.

Guardian: You can Set "Guardian Elma" face-down without "Butterfly Dagger - Elma", but you cannot Special Summon her face-down with "The Shallow Grave", etc., unless you have "Butterfly Dagger - Elma" on your side of the field.

As a result, you will Special Summon 2 monsters and your opponent will only Special Summon 1 monster.

Soul-Absorbing Bone Tower:" If a Zombie-Type monster is Special Summoned face-down (with "The Shallow Grave", etc.) then "Soul-Absorbing Bone Tower"s effect does not activate.

Torrential Tribute: When monsters are Special Summoned face-down by an effect, like "The Shallow Grave", "Torrential Tribute" can be activated.
