Card Trivia

This card is named after the mineral garnet. In certain lore, garnets were once used to reduce fevers, which might have contributed to this card's association with Fire.
This monster appears in the artwork of Revenge Return.
This card lends its name to an unofficial term used among competitive players to refer to any card one would prefer to keep in the Deck to make their plays. The origins of this term, garnet, can be traced back to when Brilliant Fusion was first released, and many Decks not focused on the Gem-Knight archetype would run a single copy of this card in order to Fusion Summon Gem-Knight Seraphinite, dump a LIGHT monster in the Graveyard and be able to Normal Summon twice, thus generating massive field advantage through a single card.

Gem-Merchant: You can activate the effect of a card like "Gem-Merchant", "Honest", or "Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow" during the Damage Step only while the monster is face-up.: For cards like "Gem-Merchant", can you activate the effect only if the monster is face-up?
Example: If a face-down "Gem-Knight Garnet" is attacked, then you can activate the effect of "Gem-Merchant" after the face-down "Gem-Knight Garnet" is flipped face-up.
