Card Trivia

This card has four counterparts: Book of Taiyou, Book of Life, Book of Eclipse & Book of Lunar Eclipse
This card has the exact opposite effect of Book of Taiyou (taiyou being Japanese for sun, so Book of Sun).
This card is the much more improved version of Darkness Approaches.
This card is a more liberal version of the anime-only Book of Flip.
The German print of this card in Legendary Collection 3: Yugi's World Mega Pack accidentally has the effect of Creature Swap printed on it.

Koa'ki Meiru Tornado: If your opponent Chains "Book of Moon" to this effect to turn a Special Summoned monster face-down, it will still be destroyed.

Rekindling: If a monster Special Summoned by "Rekindling" is flipped face-down by "Book of Moon{{Spanremoved from play during the End Phase.

Shiny Black "C": If "Book of Moon"Shiny Black C" to flip the targeted monster face-down, the monster is not destroyed because it cannot be identified as a Synchro Monster.

Solitaire Magician: If you activate this effect and the targeted "Fortune Lady" monster is flipped face-down by "Book of Moon," the effect of "Solitaire Magician" will not apply. You cannot activate "
Book of Moon" and target a Token.: Book of Moon vs Tokens

There can be multiple chains in the Battle Step before entering the Damage Step. Only the initial chain can directly respond to the attack, and only in this Chain can you activate cards such as "Mirror Force", "Sakuretsu Armor", and "Magic Cylinder" (Cards that can only be activated when your opponent's Monster declares an attack). Cards that do not have this restriction ("Book of Moon", "Compulsory Evacuation Device", "Waboku", etc) can still be activated in another Chain before entering the Damage Step.: Chains / Cadenas: battle phase timming: Attack response

A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon: If "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon" is activated and "Book of Moon" is chained, flipping the only Level 5 or higher Dragon-Type monster on the controller's side of the field face-down, then "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon" resolves without effect.
Since the entire effect of "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon" happens during resolution, the controller of the effect must be able to return a Level 5 or higher Dragon-Type monster from the field to the hand during resolution of the effect. A face-down monster's Level and Type cannot be determined, so it cannot be returned for the effect. Without returning an appropriate monster, the effect of "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon" cannot continue to resolve as the conjunction "and if you do" is used, so the effect of "A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon" resolves without effect.: A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon vs Book of Moon

Spirit Reaper: If "Spirit Reaper" is targeted by "Book of Moon", "Spirit Reaper" will be flipped face-down and will not be destroyed via its own effect. "Spirit Reaper" will destroy itself via its own effect if it is still face-up after the effect that is targeting it resolves.

OCG Rulings

You cannot activate this card during the Damage Step.: Can you activate "Book of Moon" during the Damage Step?

In Chain to an Effect which Targets

Dimensional Prison: If "Book of Moon" is used on an attacking monster, then that monster is no longer considered to be an attacking monster. Thus, if "Book of Moon" is Chained to an effect like "Dimensional Prison" or "Sakuretsu Armor" and changes the monster to face-down Defense Position, then the effect of "Sakuretsu Armor" does not resolves, so the attacking monster is not destroyed (or removed from play, and so on).: If "Book of Moon" is Chained to "Sakuretsu Armor", then is the attacking monster destroyed?

Earthbound Immortal Uru: If an effect like "Book of Moon" is Chained to the effect of "Earthbound Immortal Uru" so that the targeted monster is not face-up on the field when the effect of "Earthbound Immortal Uru" resolves, then you cannot gain control of the monster.: When resolving the effect of "Earthbound Immortal Uru", if the monster was turned face-down, then can you gain control of it?

Effect Veiler: When resolving the effect of "Effect Veiler", if the targeted monster is face-down, then do not apply the effect of "Effect Veiler" and do not negate the targeted monster's effect.: When resolving the effect of "Effect Veiler", if the targeted monster is face-down, then do you negate its effects?
Example: "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" activates its effect, and "Effect Veiler" is Chained and targets "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier", and then "Book of Moon" is Chained also targeting "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier". Resolving backwards, "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" is flipped face-down, so that "Effect Veiler" cannot negate its effect.

Elemental HERO Gaia: If "Book of Moon" is activated in chain to the effect of "Elemental HERO Gaia", so that the targeted face-up monster the opponent controls is face-down at the time of the resolution of the effect of "Elemental HERO Gaia", the effect of "Elemental HERO Gaia" is not applied.: If "Book of Moon" is activated in chain to the effect of "Elemental HERO Gaia", so that the "Elemental HERO Gaia" that activated the effect is flipped face-down, is the effect of "Elemental HERO Gaia" still applied?

Give and Take: If "Book of Moon" etc is chained to "Give and Take" so that the monster targeted by "Give and Take" is no longer face-up on the field when "Give and Take" resolves, then you still Special Summon a monster to your opponent's field.: Is the effect of "Give and Take" applied when the monster is not on the field?

Level Eater: If the effect of "Level Eater" cannot lower the monster's Level by one - such as if an effect like "Book of Moon" or "Compulsory Evacuation Device" is chained to so that the targeted Level 5 or higher monster is not face-up on the field at resolution - then "Level Eater" is not Special Summoned.: When resolving the effect of "Level Eater", if the targeted monster's Level cannot be lowered by one, then can it be Special Summoned?

Machine Duplication: If the targeted monster is no longer face-up on the field when resolving "Machine Duplication" - such as if "Book of Moon" or "Compulsory Evacuation Device" is chained - then you cannot Special Summon any monsters of the same name from your Deck.: When resolving "Machine Duplication", if the targeted monster is not face-up on the field, then can you Special Summon monsters of the same name from your Deck?

Shock Troops of the Ice Barrier: If an effect like "Book of Moon" or "Ring of Destruction" is activated in Chain to the effect of "Shock Troops of the Ice Barrier" so that the WATER monster is no longer face-up on the field at resolution, then the effect of "Shock Troops of the Ice Barrier" cannot destroy the WATER monster, so you cannot add an "Ice Barrier" monster from your Deck to your hand.: When resolving "Shock Troops of the Ice Barrier", if the WATER monster is not on the field, then do you apply the effect which adds to your hand?

Test Tiger: If the "Gladiator Beast" monster targeted by "Test Tiger" is not face-up on the field at resolution (for example, "Book of Moon" or "Ring of Destruction" was chained to the effect), then "Test Tiger" resolves without effect.: When resolving "Test Tiger"s effect, if the targeted monster is not face-up on the field, is the effect applied?

Tragoedia: If "Book of Moon" is chained to "Tragoedia"s effect and targets the same monster, then the monster is face-down when "Tragoedia"s effect resolves, so control of the monster does not change.: When resolving "Tragoedia"s effect, if the target is flipped face-down, can you still gain control of the target?

Transforming Sphere: If an effect like "Book of Moon" is Chained to the effect of "Transforming Sphere" so that the monster is face-down when resolving the effect of "Transforming Sphere", then that face-down monster is still equipped to "Transforming Sphere". The monster is equipped face-down to "Transforming Sphere", so the ATK of "Transforming Sphere" does not increase. Widespread Dud: If "Widespread Dud" is activated and an effect like "Book of Moon" or "Compulsory Evacuation Device" is Chained so that one of the targeted monsters is not face-up on the field when "Widespread Dud" resolves, then only the monster which is still on the field will remain targeted by "Widespread Dud". If that monster is removed from the field, then "Widespread Dud" is destroyed.: Is the effect of "Widespread Dud" still applied if one of the monsters is not face-up on the field when resolving the effect?

On Monsters Remembering/Forgetting How they were Summoned

Genex Neutron: If "Genex Neutron" is flipped face-down, such as with "Book of Moon", and then flipped face-up during the turn in which it was Normal Summoned, then you can still activate "Genex Neutron"s effect during the End Phase.: When "Genex Neutron" is Summoned, if at one time "Genex Neutron" was face-down, can you still activate the effect?

If "Majestic Mech - Ohka" is Normal Summoned without Tributes, or if "Majestic Mech - Goryu" is Normal Summoned with one Tribute, and either is flipped face-down with "Book of Moon" and then flipped face-up during the same turn, then its effect which sends it to the Graveyard will no longer activate during the End Phase.
